Humboldt Broncos tragedy - dealing with sadness and grief
On Friday, April 6th, a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team to a playoff game collided with a semi-truck trailer on a Saskatchewan highway, killing 15 players and staff, and leaving another 15 injured.
Since that day, tributes to the lost and injured Broncos have poured in from around the globe, and many in our own community are feeling sadness and grief, whether or not they knew any of the Broncos team.
Livingstone Range School Division would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the loved ones of the fallen Broncos, and to remind LRSD families and students that there are emotional supports and resources available within the Division for those experiencing distress related to the Humboldt Broncos incident.
A first point of contact for students, parents, and staff who would like to discuss their feelings would be their Family School Liaison Counsellor. School counsellors can also assist students, parents, and staff in accessing other mental wellness resources should they be required.
Adults experiencing distress can also seek out support through Alberta Health Services Mental Health Clinics in their communities.
According to the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response, high profile trauma incidents such as this one can intensify emotional symptoms for people already dealing with their own trauma, as well as for families, schools, communities and nations.
The Centre addresses the impact of social media, where some messages posted can be positive and helpful, while others serve to “elevate anxiety and fuel hurt and anger.”
As many of our youth are frequently connected to social media, it is important to consider the affect of what they’re viewing and sharing about the Broncos. The Centre advises parents, teachers and those working with youth to ask questions about what they’re seeing on social media, and to remain compassionate and calm about what youth express.

Livingstone Range would like to wish all those affected by the Humboldt Broncos tragedy peace in the coming days.
