FACES' 25th Year the Most Successful Yet

Posted on

During the summer of 2024, 622 high school students from across Alberta helped make the 25th year of FACES Summer Education Program the most successful yet.

"Nearly every spot in our 15 sessions was filled in record time and a larger 3rd-year Service Student presence significantly impacted the success of all sessions," says Jennifer Hamilton, FACES Principal. "FACES staff once again created an incredibly unique experiential learning opportunity for hundreds of students."

The 6-day sessions are held at PEAKS Campus in the picturesque Crowsnest Pass, with convenient access to canoeing, rock climbing, rappelling, and hiking. First-year Challenge sessions allow students to engage in self-discovery and a healthy vulnerability that grows their ability to take appropriate risks. Second-year Journey sessions find students on a 40-kilometer hike with experiences and classes that foster even greater levels of self-awareness and character-building. Third-year Service students provide leadership and service to the younger students in small groups, adventuring right alongside the Challenge and Journey participants.

"This year we welcomed more students to FACES than ever before and therefore impacted a tremendous number of young people," says Jennifer. "The success of the FACES program reflects the commitment of the Livingstone Range School Division to offer unique educational, place-based experiences In pursuit of our vision of 'Every student, every day'."

Started in 1999, FACES is a locally developed curriculum approved by Alberta Education. Students can earn up to 10 high school credits per year through participation in both a Personal Adventure (before and after camp) and the camp’s Wilderness Adventure. The curricular activities and experiences are continually being improved to provide the best educational and personal impact experiences.

Alberta students can register for FACES for the summer following their Grades 9, 10, and 11 years. Visit www.faceseducation.com for more information.
