April 8 Solar Eclipse Safety at Schools
Posted onOn Monday, April 8, 2024 a total solar eclipse will cross over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. While the path of totality in Canada occurs in southern Ontario through Nova Scotia, a partial solar eclipse will likely be visible in Alberta.
Because of the risks of looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection during an eclipse:
- Elementary schools should ensure that students are kept inside from 11:40am to 1:40pm (the time during which the partial solar eclipse may be visible in our area).
- Junior and Senior High schools may adjust their schedules and should welcome students to stay inside for the lunch break that day.
- Schools will not schedule outdoor PE classes, recess, or activities for any students between 11:40am and 1:40pm on April 8.
- Staff should review the risks of looking at the sun during an eclipse without proper eye protection.
We encourage schools to explore curriculum-related activities during this unique solar eclipse opportunity.
