PowerSchool Cybersecurity Incident

PowerSchool Identity Theft Protection and Credit Monitoring Services

PowerSchool is contacting all Livingstone Range users enrolled in the district from 2012 to 2021. These emails from PowerSchool are in response to the recent cybersecurity incident.  You can expect communication from PowerSchool at the following legitimate email addresses:

They are offering complimentary Identity Theft Protection and Credit Monitoring services for two years through Experian and TransUnion. These services are now active and available until May 30, 2025. It's important to note that while PowerSchool is offering this credit monitoring, Livingstone Range School Division did not store financial information within PowerSchool and no longer uses PowerSchool for student information

On January 7, 2025 we were informed by PowerSchool that on December 28, 2024, PowerSchool became aware of a potential cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to PowerSchool Student Information System ("SIS") customer data using a compromised credential.

When Livingstone Range School Division ended our SIS contract with PowerSchool in 2021 our data was decommissioned from PowerSchool’s current system.

What Information Was Compromised?

The compromised data includes general student and guardian information, such as:

  • Names, contact details (e.g., addresses, phone numbers, email addresses), and dates of birth
  • Basic medical information (in some cases), such as details about asthma, diabetes, or allergies
  • Administrative information, such as emergency contacts

What Information Was Not Compromised?

PowerSchool has confirmed that the following were not compromised:

  • Financial data (e.g., credit card or banking information)
  • Student profile photos, birth certificates, or passwords
  • Grades or academic achievement information

Notification of Affected Parties

PowerSchool will begin the notification process for relevant students, parents/guardians, educators and privacy regulators in Canada in early February. They will do this through public online notices, local media, and to email addresses of affected individuals (where available).

Commitment to Data Security

Livingstone Range School Division takes data and identity security very seriously.  PowerSchool has assured us that the incident is contained, and there is no evidence of malware or ongoing unauthorized activity in their systems. They have implemented enhanced security measures and are working closely with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to resolve the situation.
