School Council
Role of School Councils
Section 22.1 of the School Act outlines the duties and responsibilities of School Councils. Livingstone Range School Board Administrative Procedure 110; ‘School Councils’, provides further information regarding the operation of School Councils and Regional School Council.
Section 22(4) of the School Act states: A School Council may, at its discretion:

advise the principal and the Board respecting any matter relating to the school,
-
perform any duty or function delegated to it by the Board in accordance with delegation,
-
consult with the principal so that the principal may ensure students in the school have the opportunity to meet the standards of education set by the Minister,
-
consult with the principal so that the principal may ensure that the fiscal management of the school is in accordance with the requirements of the Board and the superintendent, and
-
do anything it is authorized under the regulations to do.
Administrative Procedure 110
School Councils, sub-section ‘School Council operation states:
A School Council may discuss or involve itself in the following during a school year:

writing a mission statement or a statement of philosophy for the School Council
-
reviewing the by-laws of the School Council
-
assisting in creating a positive school experience for the school students and staff
-
advising the principal and the Board respecting any matter relating to school
-
consulting with the principal concerning the students opportunity to meet educational standards, and ensuring that the fiscal management of the school is in accordance with the requirements of the Board and superintendent
-
developing a common vision for the school and working to implement that vision by facilitating communication and planning regarding priorities and programs that are needed to meet the expectations of the local school community.
School Council By-Laws

School Councils will establish by-laws

School Council by-laws need to address the following items:
-
Terms of admission of members and their rights and obligations
-
The mode and time of calling a general meeting and special meetings, the number necessary for a quorum at a meeting, and who has the right to vote at a meeting.

School Councils will review their by-laws annually.
