CCHS Student Explores Computer Science at National Workshop

Crowsnest Consolidated High School (CCHS) student Nadine Hamilton recently spent a week at the University of Waterloo campus to explore computer science. Seeing Possibilities and Rewards in Computer Science (SPARCS) brings together students from across Canada who have little to no exposure to computer science.  

"I heard about this workshop through my math teacher, Mrs. Plante," says Nadine. who is also a member of the school division’s student leadership group, Livingstone Leaders. "It showed me some possibilities for me to pursue computer science if I decide to."

The immersive week-long workshop in May hosts students in campus dorms and includes lectures and hands-on learning opportunities. All participants are in grade 9 or 10 and should have an interest in mathematics. To encourage better gender diversity in the field of mathematics and computer science, SPARCS is intended for people with gender identities under-represented in computer science including women, non-binary, and trans people. 

CCHS Principal Paul Pichurski celebrates Nadine's achievement. "Our school is proud of Nadine's acceptance to the SPARCS program," says Paul. "She is a dedicated student and is a key member of our school and school division student leadership team; we are excited for her to have this opportunity to pursue her interests in this program."

Nadine reflects on her adventure in Ontario. "Meeting new people with the same interests as me as well as the lectures were the best part of my experience at SPARCS," says Nadine. "I learned that I can do a lot more than I thought I could if I put my mind to it. I would encourage other students to apply because it could be a life-changing experience."
