CCHS Students Cover "That Song" for Class Project

The senior high music class at Crowsnest Consolidated High School chose their own song for a Canadian music recording project this year. In a departure from the class' typical participation in the CBC Canadian Music Class Challenge, students instead chose to learn, practice, and record their own selection: "That Song" by Canadian-American rock band Big Wreck.

"I could not be prouder of these students," says Tynan Groves, Music Teacher and Educational Assistant at CCHS. "This was a task fraught with lessons in patience, learning to be objective when encountering mistakes, and making accommodations for classmates' nerves. It was a wonderful learning process that we undertook."

The music assignment was twofold: to explore Canadian music content and the process of recording. One student musician had been introduced to Big Wreck's "That Song" in the summer and thought it would work well for a class project. To record the song, students used a very common digital audio workstation (DAW) captured with Garageband, available on Apple computers and iPhones. 

In addition to recording, the students also played live at the November Winter Formal school dance. They will share their talents again at the school concert in December and a community fundraising showcase in January. 

"This is an excellent music class, filled with some of the most talented students I have had the privilege of teaching at CCHS," says Groves. "I believe many of them are going to go onto post-secondary for music and I'm certain they will be successful."
