MHHS Student Helps Raise Over $11,000 for Former Student

Posted on

When Adam Noel found out about a cancer diagnosis and treatment for a former Matthew Halton High School (MHHS) student and fellow Jiu-Jitsu Club member Liam Hale, he knew that he needed to do something to help.

"In the past, my family has experienced cancer and the financial struggles related to treatments," says Noel. "Liam is an amazing, kind, and compassionate person. It was an easy decision to start a fundraiser at school."

Noel approached MHHS Principal Bryan Burns to ask for the school's help in raising money for the 22-year-old Hale. With the help of the entire Pincher Creek Community, they raised more than $11,000.

"This was a student-generated idea that we helped facilitate," says Burns. "I applaud Adam for using his voice to speak up when wanting to help someone in need. From a simple thought of what can I do to help, Adam was a driving force in facilitating a fundraiser that connected and brought together individuals, the school and community."

The main fundraiser was Pasta With Purpose, a pasta primavera dinner for four people, including vegetables, garlic toast, and desert which cost $50. Local businesses, ranchers, and restaurants donated groceries and supplies. Orders were placed and then staff, community members, and even students helped prepare 130 meals. On December 18, 2024 orders were ready for pick-up at the school and even delivery.

"Throughout the process Adam and his pal Grady were hands-on as they advertised, knocked on doors, and then delivered the meals throughout Pincher Creek," says Burns. "Ranchers were coming in with coolers or meat to donate. Many folks ordered meals and asked them to be donated to families in need and the local women's shelter. It is great to see that we have Hawks who can step up when needed!”

In addition to Pasta With Purpose, donations came in other ways. The Class of 2020 — Hale's graduating class — donated their unused graduation funds to the cause. They were unable to have a traditional graduation because of COVID-19, and yet the money still made an impact. During the school's annual Hockey Academy Student VS Staff hockey game, there was Chuck-a-Puck fundraiser and a Grade 7 bake sale, with all proceeds going to the Hale fundraiser.

Noel was impressed with the community's caring. "From the instant support from the public in the many ways that it was shown, I have learned that no matter the person no matter the situation there is always a way that you can help or support someone," he says. "Thank you once again for your unwavering support. Together, we have achieved something truly remarkable, and I am proud to be part of such an amazing community."

Graduating this year, Noel is planning to pursue a Justice Studies diploma at Red Deer Polytechnic and then become an RCMP constable. "This fundraiser has just shown and reinforced my desire and need to help people whenever I can, in which I hope to continue to do through my work."
