Nanton Schools Decanting Information

Posted on

From approved design funding in March 2023 to approved construction funding in March 2024 to approval to move to construction tender in January 2025, the Nanton New & Modernized Schools project continues to move ahead. Today we are pleased to share the Nanton New & Modernized Schools decanting plan

It is anticipated that preparatory work will begin on the new elementary school construction project site in late spring 2025. Construction work on modernizing the current A.B. Daley building that will become the new high school will begin mid-July 2025. Students will stay in their current spaces until the end of this school year. Decanting (temporary relocation during construction) will begin in September 2025.

Students (pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12) will be relocated to the J.T. Foster building, with elementary students on the first floor and junior/senior high school students on the second floor. Because the J.T. Foster building will not fit all Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 students comfortably, and because there is no decanting funding for on-site portables, additional spaces in the community will be used.

We express our appreciation to the following community organizations for supporting student decantment:

  • Nanton United Church (2121 21 St)
  • St. Cecilia's Catholic Church (2308 19 St)
  • Bomber Command Museum of Canada  (1659 21 Ave, AB-2)
  • (Subject to Town Council Approval) Town of Nanton - Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre (2122 18 St)

Classrooms on-campus and off-campus will have all necessary equipment and tools for learning, including interactive displays, white boards, Chromebooks, and as required, spaces for physical activity.

During decanting all bus students will be transported directly to and from J.T. Foster, with commuter buses transporting impacted students to and from off-campus sites throughout the day. The high school timetable will be developed with the decanting sites and transportation in mind to maximize instructional time and minimize student transfer.

School administration teams will have separate office spaces in the school, with their same school phone numbers and procedures. Elementary and junior/senior high students will have separate school entrances.

We anticipate decanting lasting for two school years (2025-2026 and 2026-2027). New construction and modernization should be completed in the summer of 2027, and staff and students will start at new and modernized school buildings in September 2027.
