Athletics & Extracurricular Activities May Resume Under COVID-19 Protocols
Posted onLivingstone Range School Division delayed the start of athletics and extracurricular activities for the 2020-2021 school year to focus on a safe and smooth school re-entry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning October 19, 2020 schools may resume athletic and extracurricular activities under COVID-19 protocols.
Schools will be able to start holding sports practices and, when ready, begin inter-school competition within the school division. School Athletic Directors and school-based administrators will collaboratively plan modified seasons of play and mini-leagues based on the recommendations in the relaunch guidance documents from the government of Alberta. As we restart school athletics, there will be no games or tournaments with teams outside of Livingstone Range School Division until further notice.
Extracurricular activities such as performing arts, clubs, and fundraisers may also resume, provided staff and students follow recommendations in the government of Alberta’s relaunch documents relating to the particular activities.
All LRSD students - including in-school, at-home, and home education students - are eligible to participate in athletics and extracurricular activities through LRSD schools.
Certain challenges must be addressed as these extracurricular and athletic activities resume. We are working to ensure the following measures are in place as soon as possible:
- Staff and coaches developing rapid response plans and protocols for their activity/sport based on the applicable government of Alberta guidance documents.
- Hiring additional custodial staff and/or staffing hours to clean and sanitize school areas after hours when activities/athletics are taking place.
- Hiring bus drivers for additional extracurricular trips (such as games played in another community).
Livingstone Range School Division is committed to providing safe environments where students can participate in the activities they enjoy and which offer rewarding opportunities for personal growth, camaraderie, and wellness.
More details about cohorts, mini-leagues, seasons of play, volunteers, and spectators will be provided in early October.
